Toyota has recently announced its ambitious project to construct a cutting-edge smart city dedicated to artificial intelligence and advanced technologies in Japan. Dubbed "Woven City," this innovative urban endeavor is set to serve as a "living laboratory" spanning across 175 acres.
Located approximately 100 miles from Tokyo, nestled at the base of Japan's iconic Mount Fuji, construction on Woven City commenced earlier this week. The city will be managed by a single operating system and will feature dedicated lanes for autonomous vehicles. Designed to be a testbed for urban technologies including robotics, interconnected smart homes, and artificial intelligence, Woven City promises to revolutionize urban living.
According to the company, there will be an underground road to facilitate goods transportation within the city. Toyota first unveiled the project at CES 2020, outlining plans for three types of interconnected roads at ground level: one for pedestrians, one for personal mobility devices like scooters, and another for autonomous vehicles. Toyota introduced its autonomous vehicle, the e-Palette, in 2018, which is expected to play a significant role in the transportation infrastructure of Woven City. The company has previously described these vehicles as "scalable and customizable" for various functions such as ride-sharing, delivery services, and even mobile offices and hotels.
Toyota also revealed that residents of Woven City will live in smart homes equipped with a range of integrated robotic systems to assist with daily life, alongside sensor-based artificial intelligence to monitor human health and fulfill other essential needs. The initial phase of the project will involve approximately 360 residents from diverse age groups, including some Toyota employees and their families, as well as scientists and innovators evaluating the effectiveness of various technological solutions.
Woven City represents a bold vision for the future of urban living, where cutting-edge technologies converge to create a sustainable and interconnected community. As the project unfolds, it offers a glimpse into a future where AI, robotics, and smart infrastructure shape the way we live, work, and interact in cities.
Stay tuned for more updates on this groundbreaking initiative as Toyota paves the way for the cities of tomorrow.
